Backpedaling the Mayan Apocalypse

Here’s a little example of people who were wrong about the Mayan Apocalypse, the first site that comes up in a search. These folks seem to be associated with Jose Argulles. Note the delightful backpedaling. Now that they can’t make any more money off of this trope, WHAT WILL THEY DO NEXT?

13moon.com – What were they saying in 2004?:

Pacal Votan’s prophetic call is alerting present-day humanity that our biological process is transforming, approaching the culmination of a26,000 year evolutionary program.

Bringing the return of universal telepathy, heightened sense capacity, and self-reflective consciousness, this is a return to the sacred domain of our inner technology.

This grand cycle of evolution will culminate winter solstice, December 21, 2012 AD.

OK. Mayans in UFOs, telepathy, real good stuff. So what are they saying now?

By focusing too heavily on external events, one may be missing the true significance of this prophetic date…. As we internally align with this grand shifting of cycles we can contribute our personal inspiration and commitment to being part of this collective transformation.

Uh huh.

This is one example; I could find hundreds more, but it’s not really worth it. Suffice to say that shucksters and pitchmen like Daniel Pinchbeck and Bernard Perona (aka “Drunvalo Melchizedek”) and the Jose Argulles crowd and their ilk will now all be insisting that they didn’t mean anything would *literally* happen, it was all intended to be *internal*, and they didn’t *really* mean it would happen in 2012, the date was just, you know, an arbitrary something-or-other in spite of the book I wrote that has “2012” in the title and HEY, LOOK OVER THERE AT THAT NEXT THING!

And the typical audiences for the tripe they shovel out will pause for a moment of brief reflection, and most will double-down and return right back to the trough, because it’s really difficult to admit that you’re wrong about something as huge as a massive planetary change of consciousness. I mean, don’t you think most people would notice something like that happening?

A lot of people think these jerks are harmless, but this whole 2012 thing has real world effects– just do a Google Search for ‘2012 end of the world suicide‘ and keep scrolling. Unfortunately, just like most failed prophets, these guys are going to get away with it by changing their tunes.
